Erasure Coding

Erasure Coding (EC) is a strategy by which one can realize a more favorable ratio of raw to usable storage capacity as well as potentially greater fault tolerance. The downsides are greater complexity, more computation, and potentially increased time to recover from failures. Depending on the EC parameters chosen, hardware, and workload, performance may be impacted as well.

Ceph has supported EC for RGW object storage pools for some time; new with the Kraken release and mature with the Luminous LTS release is support for RBD block storage pools as well, now that partial overwrites have been improved for significant write performance gains.
