Engineering practice

Engineering practice is mostly invisible.

We can see the results of engineering every day. Phones, buildings, roads, vehicles, and aircraft: the list of engineering achievements is almost endless.

Yet, these are all objects, some of them vast systems of man-made structures, while others are almost too small to see.

Engineering practice, on the other hand, is a human activity. It is performed by extraordinary people in some cases, but most are entirely ordinary. Engineering artefacts like drawings, models and documents represent what is to be, or what has been built: the finished objects. What they seldom represent is the human performances that led to these artefacts and the creation of the objects that they represent. ...
