Free Software Foundation

If you don’t have access to the Internet, you can buy Emacs directly from the FSF. They sell Emacs in a number of formats, including CD-ROM, floppy disks (for the MS-DOS version), and the following types of tape, all in tar format:

  • 1600- or 6250-bpi ½-inch reel-to-reel

  • Sun DC300XLP ¼-inch cartridge (QIC 24)

  • Hewlett-Packard 16-track DC600HC ¼-inch cartridge

  • IBM RS/6000 ¼-inch cartridge (QIC 150)

  • Exabyte 8-mm cartridge

  • DAT 4-mm cartridge

The FSF offers various product combinations, including subscription services. Normally, it includes source code only (except for the DOS floppies, which contain a prebuilt executable), although FSF is willing to build Emacs to order if you specify your hardware and software configuration. Prices range from (at the time of this writing) $60 for a CD-ROM for an individual user up to $5000 for Emacs built to order. CD-ROMs contain a wide variety of FSF programs and documentation, whereas tapes contain only a few key programming utilities, and the gzip software, in addition to Emacs.

The FSF can also sell you copies of the GNU Emacs Reference Manual, all other GNU software, documentation, T-shirts, and other goodies.
