Chapter 20It's Not How You Start; It's How You Finish

The five fundamentals discussed in this book provide a framework for creating the context in which you can become the best leader you can be—a mindset that promotes continuous growth and development.

To become the best you have to believe you can. You have the power and capacity to be exemplary, and you need to believe that deep down. Do not let anyone tell you anything different. You have to aspire to excel. You need a set of values and a vision that are greater than you are, and you need to think long term. You have to challenge yourself to go beyond your current level of performance and experiment with new and different ways of doing things. Your growth opportunities start at the edges of your current capacity. You have to engage support to learn and grow. Learning leadership is not something you do all by yourself. You need other people to help you become your best. Finally, you have to practice deliberately. Bringing out the best in yourself takes practice, and practice takes time. You have to make learning a daily habit.

Making learning a daily habit is where you start. However, there's more, because it's not just how you start; it's also how you finish. Like anything in life, the evidence that you are leading, and leading well, will come based on the actions you take not just on the first day but also through to the last day.
