Summary

In this chapter, you learned how to write different kind of select statements in order to retrieve data from the database and how to create queries and views.

We also went through the reasons for choosing which of the data retrieval mechanisms to use in different scenarios. We also discussed how to optimize the data retrieval so that each transfer of data from the database to the application only contains the data necessary for the further operations in the application and how to make sure that the correct index is used to find the data.

In the next chapter, we will look at how to manipulate data by inserting, updating, and deleting records.
