Importing OpenStreetMap data

OpenStreetMap is an open data community-driven initiative that regroups and shares geographical data of the world (streets, roads, stations, bus stops, and so on).

To get data, we have different options. First, we have the OSM site that allows you to export the data for the zone displayed on the screen. This is perfect for getting a small file of the places around where you live. In the examples later in this chapter, I use a file I exported from this URL,  http://www.openstreetmap.org/export#map=16/48.8576/2.2949. (Disclaimer: I do not live there. Unfortunately.)

The GeoFabrik website, http://download.geofabrik.de/, proposed by OSM, will allow you to download files for bigger zones (continents, countries, regions) ...
