Creating a tabular model

In order to create tabular data models, you need a SQL Server Analysis Services server installed to support Tabular Data Model (TDM) because a default installation can only work with multidimensional models (which work with much larger datasets).

For the purposes of this book, the SQL Server 2012 server NJ—a named instance—has been installed to support TDM. In this section, we are only describing what steps are needed to create the model and deploy it to an analysis server suitable for creating Power View reports.

In the following exercise we create a tabular model using SQL Server Analysis Services with SQL Server Data Tools.
