In its current state, the REST API is used for a variety of purposes and is primarily meant to solve technical gimmicks that developers encounter on a regular basis. REST is a preferred choice for use in web applications where requests can be directed to any instance of a component, and thus its stateless can be quickly redeployed if something goes in the wrong direction.
