CHAPTER 5
ROCKS AND STARS
EARTH AND ITS MOON: INSEPARABLE FROM ONE ANOTHER
Let’s begin this chapter with a question that Leonardo pondered and wrote about in one of his notebooks in the early 1500s: What do we need in order to see the Moon and its features? Here are some possible answers. Which would you choose?
“THE MOON HAS NO LIGHT OF ITSELF, BUT SO MUCH OF IT AS THE SUN SEES IT ILLUMINATES. AND OF THAT ILLUMINATED PART WE SEE AS MUCH AS FACES US.”
—Leonardo da Vinci, notebook entry made some time between 1492 and 1518
