The practice of law has seen its highs and lows through the centuries. Beginning in ancient Greece and Rome, individuals were expected to argue their cases. Still, they would ask another to argue on their behalf. Over time, these representatives evolved into advocates trained in rhetoric, not law. By the start of the Byzantine Empire, 395 BC, the legal profession had become “well-established, highly regulated, and highly stratified.”1
