There’s this scene toward the end of the iconic 1988 smash hit movie Big where Josh (Tom Hanks) and Susan (Elizabeth Perkins) are toy executives pitching the concept of a new electronic game to other company members. The concept was a simple comic book adventure game where, in the end, players could move on to other adventures by plucking down U.S.$18.95 for a new disk to resume the game with a new adventure. Josh’s rival, Paul (John Heard), anxious over the meteoric rise of Josh at the company after only a few weeks, smugly chimed in, “I don’t get it.”
The unit would be expensive, and what kid could afford to buy game disks? (Never mind that the film’s opening scene show Josh at his true age of 12 playing a video game.)
