If a process step/activity does not meet all of the above criteria, it will fall into the non-value-added
category. Non-value-added activities generally rob us of time and/or resources, contribute to staff
frustration and do not add value to the service or product from the customer’s perspective. Non-
value activities can be divided into three sub-categories:
1. Non-value-added but necessary work
2. Unnecessary work
3. Idle time
Needless to say, one can get into very heated arguments over what is value-added and what is not.
