Libraries and distance education

Chinwe Nwezeh

Introduction

Distance education creates and provides access to learning when information sources and learners are separated by time or distance or both. It involves the creation of an educational experience of qualitative value for the learner that is best suited to their needs outside the classroom. Distance education is often referred to as distance learning; it is a field of education which focuses on pedagogy, andragogy, instructional systems and technology to deliver education to students who are not in a physical classroom or campus setting. Distance education is also synonymous with the terms ‘open learning’, ‘correspondence learning’ and ‘external study’.
