Redefining librarianship

Can the library and information profession make the necessary changes to fit itself for a 21st century existence? This chapter recognises the traditional foundations on which the current paradigm is based and explores their potential for constraining continuing recognition of the profession within contemporary society. It acknowledges the context within which any organisation advocating for a specific area of professional practice has to operate; and speculates about future professional practice, the potential for professional organisations in a new regime of public service, and of the influence the profession could exert were steps taken to develop a new model.
