What is information literacy?

The term information literacy (IL) appeared in studies published back in the 1990s within the world of libraries, but it did not start to be widely used until ten years later. Cuevas (2007: 25) defines the concept as ‘education in a set of competencies and skills related to the access, to use and evaluation of information’. Information literacy is closely related to digital literacy and is a key element in the networked society, the knowledge society and the society of lifelong learning.
