Publication ethics

Abstract:

This chapter examines basic ethical issues in scholarly publishing: authorship, plagiarism, copyright and fair use, research misconduct, privacy, conflict of interest, simultaneous submission and redundant publication, and irresponsible scholarship. Libraries that publish scholarly journals will need to address some, if not all, of these issues when they create journal policies, and it is useful to be familiar with the recommended practices provided by international publishing bodies (e.g., the International Council of Medical Journal Editors). The chapter concludes with a discussion of appropriate responses to author misconduct, as well as how best to handle errors in published articles.
