Bob: I could hardly hear Maria when she first arrived in my class because she would look away from me, speak hardly above a whisper, and seem reluctant to state any opinions. It soon became apparent that she behaved this way in most of her interactions. So I could hardly believe it when—five weeks into my class—she told me a story about how, when one of the executives made a decision that her coworkers all resented but dared not challenge, Maria set up an appointment with her and constructively but directly explained why she thought it was a bad decision.
