16.1 BASIC EPICYCLIC GEARING
General background
During
the
early development
of the
sliding-mesh
or
crash gearbox some pioneer designers, notably
Dr F.W.
Lanchester
in
this country
and
Henry Ford
in
America,
sought
to
avoid
its
crude mode
of
operation
by
adopting
a different system
of
gearing known
as
epicyclic
or
planetary.
The
system
is so
named because
the
behav-
iour
of its
geared elements, which rotate about
a
com-
mon axis,
is
similar
to
that found
in our
solar system.
Since
all the
gears were permanently meshed
and
engaged
by
some form
of
friction brake,
the
value
of
the epicyclic gearbox
lay in its
foolproof characteristics ...
