18 Overdrive gears
18.1 PURPOSE AND POSITION
OF AN
OVERDRIVE GEAR
General background
An overdrive gear
may be
defined
as a
means
of
providing
a
higher (that
is,
numerically lower) ratio
than that given
by the
final drive gears,
so
that engine
speed
can be
reduced
in
relation
to
vehicle speed.
Even
in the
very early years
of
motor
car
devel-
opment, there were some designers
who
recognized
that
it
could
be
advantageous
to
provide
a
step-up gear
within
the
gearbox, thereby enabling
the
output shaft
to rotate faster than
the
input shaft.

the
engine could
be
allowed
to
rotate
at a
slower speed
than
the
propeller shaft when
