19.6 FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE SHAFTS
General considerations
Before commenting upon the construction of front-
wheel drive shafts, it may be useful first to compare
their duty with that of an equivalent single propeller
shaft in the Hotchkiss drive system:
1 The location of the drive shafts is such that they are
necessarily shorter in length.
2 Since the drive shafts operate directly between the
final drive and the road wheels they transmit greater
torque.
3 From point 2 it also follows that they rotate at a
slower speed.
