heavy side loading, it is often provided with a steady
pad that is mounted from the final drive housing. This
steady pad is either screw or shim adjusted to be just
clear of the non-meshing face of the crown wheel under
light-load running conditions.
Where the final drive is combined with the gearbox
to provide a transaxle, the bearing arrangements for
the pinion may differ slightly from those found in the
live axle, because the gearbox layshaft also serves as
