If
during cornering
the
front tyres
run at a
greater
slip angle than the rears then
an
understeering effect
is produced whereby the front
of
the vehicle tends
to
run wide (Figure 21.10). This characteristic
is not
regarded
as
dangerous because
any
breakaway
is
progressive
and
fairly easily controlled
by
further
turning the steering wheel. On the other hand,
if
the
rear tyres
run at a
larger slip angle than
the
fronts
then the rear
of
the vehicle tends
to
swing wide into
the corner
and
this
can
result
in
breakaway that
is
vicious and difficult
to
control.
