Advantages and disadvantages of indirect injection
It was early found by P. L'Orange (introduced in the
previous section) that the indirect-injection diesel en-
gine ran more smoothly and less noisily than its direct-
injection counterpart. Indeed, it is these self-same
operating characteristics that account for the indirect-
injection system in either precombustion (Figure 3.15a)
or, more commonly, swirl chamber form (Figure 3.15b)
also finding acceptance in modern diesel engined motor
cars.
