
6 Carburation and fuel injection
6.1 FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM
General layout
The purpose of the fuel supply system for petrol engine
carburation is to store, transfer and filter the petrol
required by the mixing chamber of the carburettor. It
comprises a fuel tank, either a mechanically or elec-
trically operated fuel pump, fuel filters, the carburettor
float chamber and the necessary pipelines to connect
these services.
Fuel tank
The fuel tank is located remote from the engine (Figure
6.1). In a front-engined car, the fuel tank may be
