described earlier. For a diesel car the pump may be
driven in a similar manner to that of an electrical
ignition distributor. A designer will always seek to
minimize backlash in the pump drive, since otherwise
the fluctuations in drive torque imposed by the pumping
process can produce troublesome torsional oscillations.
The final connection to the pump drive shaft is made
through a splined or a keyed shaft, according to the
engine manufacturer's requirements.
