9.2 METHODS OF PRESSURE CHARGING
Inertia ramcharging
This represents a modest form of pressure charging in
which no resort is made to the use of a separate
compressor, driven either directly or indirectly from
the engine. It does in fact exploit a pressure wave
effect, which accompanies the oscillating motion of the
charge in the intake system due to the closing and the
opening of the inlet valve. By suitable adjustment of
the length of intake pipe, it can be so contrived that the
pressure wave is approaching its crest just as the inlet
valve is opening.
