10.4 INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONIC IGNITION
SYSTEMS
General background
The concept of introducing electronic components into
the electrical ignition system of motor vehicles, orig-
inally to improve the life of the contact-breaker points
and later to eliminate them altogether, is by no means
of recent origin. Joseph Lucas developed a breakerless
electronic ignition system for racing car engines in the
early 1960s, and General Motors in America offered
such a system as optional equipment on their 1962
Pontiac models. About the same time a number of
