In modern transmission practice, there are two basic
approaches to accommodating this unwanted movement
at the clutch release bearing: non-continuous contact,
and continuous contact.
Non-continuous contact
The essential features of both mechanical and hydraulic
versions of this once traditional method of accommo-
dating the effects of lining wear are that the clutch
pedal height remains constant, but included in the
pedal movement is a certain amount of free play (Figure
