Hardware Discovery
Knowing how to find out what hardware an operating system runs on and what peripherals are attached is a necessary skill for all systems administrators – at the very least, every administrator needs to know how many CPU cores they have and how much memory there is to allocate resources to applications. In this chapter, we’ll learn how to retrieve and interpret information about CPUs, USB peripherals, and storage devices, using both the raw kernel interfaces and utilities to work with them. We will also cover tools specific to x86 machines with a SMBIOS/DMI interface.
