Any new hardware needs specific skill. In this respect, zSeries machines are no different from other platforms. Setting up Linux on the mainframe requires zSeries skill and probably also z/VM skill. If you do not have sufficient skill in your IT division, you will have to acquire it. A zSeries machine has too much potential not to invest in optimizing its operations. Your system administrator's mainframe skill is instrumental in this effort.
You can find a roadmap of training courses that are relevant to Linux on the mainframe, z/VM, and zSeries hardware at the IBM Global Services site: http://www.ibm.com/services/learning/us/roadmaps/
