While working with hard drives and partitions, we may need to create copies or make backups of full partitions rather than copying all contents (not only hard disk partitions but also copy an entire hard disk without missing any information, such as boot record, partition table, and so on). In this situation we can use the
dd command. It can be used to clone any type of disks, such as hard disks, flash drives, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, and so on.
dd command expands to Data Definition. Since its improper usage leads to loss of data, it is nicknamed as "Data Destroyer". Be careful while using the order of arguments. Wrong arguments can lead to loss of entire data or can become useless.
