The best cities are a balance of global icons and intimate neighbourhoods.
While the considerations of density, tolerance, infrastructure and extensive facilities are all important to a city’s make-up, I want to focus on liveability. I believe it is this characteristic that is absolutely critical to the attractiveness of a city, particularly to permanent residents.
To achieve liveability, development should fuse big-city life with village culture. We increasingly refer to neighbourhoods within our major cities as villages. Why are we inclined to do this and what are the attributes of village life that can be successfully applied to city life in order to improve the places where we live and work?
