Coming home from a concert one evening one of us met a musician friend who asked, “Where have you been?” He answered, “I have been to a concert of a famous orchestra”. Whereupon she enquired, “Did they play together or merely at the same time?”

In this chapter we look at the first leg of Living Leadership: how effective leaders connect well enough to the people around them. As we said, Living Leadership exists between people. It is not the property of individual leaders nor do followers create it. It is the product of the subtle interplay of the individual and others in a particular context and moment.
