This appendix examines the different ways that data is encoded onto a medium for Ethernet, fibre channel, FDDI, and Token Ring LANs.

A detailed acquaintance with encodings is not really needed to install, manage, or troubleshoot a LAN. If an Ethernet or Token Ring chip or a digital signal processor misbehaves, a LAN administrator uses a tester or SNMP to track down the bad NIC, pull it out, and replace it. Many NICs come with lifetime replacement guarantees. Hub and switch products usually are backed by good multiyear guarantees.
