Fibre Channel and ATM

A fibre channel LAN operates at very high speeds and has a topology that is ring-based, switch-based, or a combination of both. The technology initially was used to build storage area networks (SANs) that enabled computers to access and share disk or tape storage resources. Increasingly, fibre channel is used to build LANs that interconnect high-performance computers, storage devices, and other peripheral devices.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) initially was introduced as a wide area networking technology. A LAN capability was added later. It enabled ATM systems to communicate with one another—and with Ethernet or Token Ring systemsacross a local switch or across a wide area connection.
