Chapter 6. The Ethernet 10Mbps Physical Layer

This chapter describes the physical characteristics of Ethernet LANs built using 10Mbps coax, twisted-pair, and fiber optic Ethernet media. Some Ethernet LANs are constructed using a single medium, such as twisted-pair cabling. However, many have been built using a mixture of media types.

Although many people think of coax Ethernet as a technology of the past, a quick check of cabling and components catalogs shows that a market for the technology still exists. There is an installed base of coax LANs that are working well and whose users are satisfied.
