100BASE-FX and FDDI

A 100Mbps optical fiber implementation was produced very quickly by borrowing the physical layer from the FDDI physical layer defined by ANSI standards committee X3T9.5. The important characteristics of 100BASE-FX are listed here:

  • It runs across a pair of optical fibers. 62.5/125 micron multimode fiber is specified in the 802.3 standard.

  • A segment length of up to 412 meters is supported for half-duplex communication. Up to 2000 meters are supported across a full-duplex link.

  • The fiber optic cables are terminated by the same SC or ST connectors that were mentioned in Chapter 6, "The Ethernet 10Mpbs Physical Layer" (see Figure 6.27).

  • Data is transmitted onto one fiber and received on the other.
