GARP VLAN Registration Protocol Details

The convenience and power of having a generic registration protocol was confirmed when the second GARP application was introduced. The GARP VLAN Registration Protocol (GVRP) enables systems to register VLAN memberships with an adjacent port. A system sends a join message to register.

Bridges propagate their static, port-based VLAN memberships and dynamic VLAN registrations in order to assure that frames transmitted onto a VLAN can reach any VLAN participant.
