“Reality” may—or should, on occasion—goad you into changing a business model.

Consider the example of Billy Beane, general manager of the Oakland A’s, who faced reality in the 1980s. He could not compete with the spending of teams like the Yankees and Red Sox, which were able to field a mega-million-dollar Moose because of the size of their urban and TV markets.

Rather than face a future as an also-ran, Beane sucked up some reality and decided to take a different route. He examined the conventional wisdom that defined which characteristics make a baseball player desirable to a team.
