Glossary

Broadcasters are well known for their buzzwords and balderdash. The following pages introduce you to some of the language used in the biz so that you can sound like a radio professional right from the start!

1st adjacent channel:
The position on the broadcast band directly next to another channel.
2nd adjacent channel:
The position on the broadcast band that is two positions away from another channel.
Adds (additions):
New songs or albums added to a station’s music rotation each week.
Aircheck:
A recorded copy of broadcast audio used for demonstration purposes.
AM (Amplitude Modulation):
This refers to the way an audio signal is encoded on the carrier frequency. AM was the first form to transmit wireless radio signals. Operates at a frequency range of 535–1705 kHZ on the standard broadcast band.
Archive:
A library of recorded audio tracks or radio programs.
ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers):
A performance rights organization that collects and distributes royalties on behalf of songwriters and composers. Find them online at ascap.com.
ATH (Aggregate Tuning Hours):
Total number of hours listeners have spent listening to an online radio station. These are necessary for calculating streaming music royalty payments.
Audioport:
Program sharing system for community radio stations. Developed and managed by the Pacifica Affiliates Network.
Back announce:
Information about a track, such as title and artist name, spoken by a radio presenter after ...
