The Role and Function of Linux

When learning about Linux, you must first understand the role Linux plays in a computer system. Linux is an operating system, not an application. All operating systems, including Linux, provide five key functions in a computer system:

Application platform An operating system provides a platform where applications can run, managing their access to the CPU and system memory.
