Managing Software with RPM

When installing software on a Linux system, you essentially have two choices to choose from:

• Install a precompiled application or service from a software package. Packages contain executables (and other files) that have been precompiled and configured for a specific hardware architecture and/or Linux distribution.

• Install from source. When you install from source, you use a compiler on your system to compile the application’s source code into executables that can run on your hardware and distribution.
