Chapter 22

Metallurgy – Corrosion

Abstract

Metallurgy is the technology of metals, and the way in which science is applied to producing metal components. This chapter considers the selection of metals for particular services, and how they degrade during that service. Topics include embrittlement, environmental cracking, creep and creep rupture. Corrosion is discussed in detail, including the chemistry of corrosion reactions, corrosion types, and how corrosion can be monitored and controlled.
