PC Exchange

PC Exchange is the part of File Exchange that enables you to map, or match, PC file extensions, or suffixes, to Mac OS applications. This does two things:

  • It enables your Mac to display the correct icons for PC files (Figure 2).

  • It enables you to open a PC file with a specific application by simply double-clicking it.

PC Exchange is preconfigured with many common extension mappings, but you can add, remove, or modify mappings as desired.


Mapping an extension to an application doesn't guarantee that the application can successfully open the document.

To set file mapping options

Choose Apple menu > Control Panels > File Exchange (Figure 3).
