Abstract
Machine communications require low-cost, ubiquitous coverage, 10-year battery life, and global harmonization. No existing wireless technologies or networks deliver all of these. Designing a new wireless technology was until recently hampered by the availability of suitable radio spectrum that was low cost, low frequency, plentiful, and globally harmonized.
