Databases are an extremely powerful, but often misunderstood, tool for building Web-based applications. Although the primary purpose of a database, as the name might suggest, is to provide a container for data, it’s a common misconception to assume that the data is just numbers, or names and addresses, or really anything specific.

Databases can contain everything from a price list, to video files, to an entire magazine article. In fact, one of the most common uses for a database on the Web is to provide a content management system, which serves up articles, ads, and whatnot automatically, without having to create a separate page for each item.
