This book is about communications, and this chapter deals with one of the most crucial forms of communications: the exchange of money for goods and services. A very long time ago, there were financial institutions, like banks, which let you deposit and withdraw money. Many times, the withdrawals were for the purchase of items, and the deposits were payments for the goods and services that you provided to others.
Apple has become one of the largest corporations in the world, and part of its assets is its list of customers and credit card numbers. That list in and of itself is quite valuable. Close to a billion people have their credit cards on file with Apple. This means that, subject to their credit limits, they can easily make purchases from Apple.
Building up a customer list like this is a critical part of today’s business world for any major corporation. After that list is built, the corporation can reach out to customers (and potential customers) to encourage purchases. Special offers can be made to customers, too.
