20 How to deal with ‘not nice change’

Throughout this book, there are examples of ‘nice’ change. Thinking about how to grow a business, helping people and organisations to be more efficient and effective. All involve people changing how they think and how they behave. The outcome is designed to be more favourable to them. But not all change is nice. I’ve been part of three ‘restructurings’ of businesses. On each occasion, people have lost their jobs – sometimes people who had spent generations at a company were made redundant. I want to spend some time highlighting the things which are especially important in the ‘not nice change’ environment.
