WHAT CAN I EXPECT NOW?

Losing a job is about much more than simply losing a job. It’s also about losing important relationships, experiencing tremendous uncertainty, and even having a changed sense of self. It’s an emotional experience. It’s better to shed a few tears at the beginning than to pretend there’s no hurt, or it doesn’t bother you, or there’s no embarrassment or disappointment or disorientation—only to have to deal with those feelings several months from now.

If you don’t deal with those feelings now, you’ll have to deal with them later, after they’ve had a chance to grow “underground” for a while. Worse yet, you could get stuck in one or two dimensions of what we call the Deems Job Loss Reaction Cycle™ (see figure 1.1). ...
