I made my first pair of jackhammer headphones about 15 years ago while doing volunteer work for the blind. Many organizations are devoted to helping the blind, including the Library of Congress (LOC) and the Minnesota Braille Press, where I was a volunteer.

The LOC mailed blind people audio books on halfspeed cassettes that played on special orange tape recorders. I used to repair these machines along with a group of retired telephone company workers. Other volunteers, mostly actors, read books onto tape in many sound booths. ...
